Plot twists during Hell Week a really nothing new. If anything, our contestants spoke ad nauseum about anticipating a curve ball and never letting their guard down but we still don't think they saw this coming! If, like them, you're still trying to wrap your mind around the new format, this breakdown is here to help.

This year, our hopefuls got asked to choose their own Group Song from 12 options with Unathi stressing repeatedly that they take their time and choose a song that best suits their range. This stands in stark contrast to the rat race that usually happens as Group Leaders scamper to pick the best (or easiest) song before anyone else does. This time, everyone gets to sing the song they picked even if someone else picked it first. If everyone picks the same song, so be it. It's about picking what best compliments your voice so you can shine! Sounds like a walk in the park right? Well, here's the twist

Unlike in years past, this year's Group Phase is a VOCAL BATTLE with the talent taking turns to sing lead and out-perform one other. That means no harmonising, no group choreo and most importantly, no-one hiding behind someone esle's ingenuity and talent by fading into the background and singing back-up. Instead, a backing track and background vocals will be provided.

This creates a whole new dynamic as our contestants not only look to outclass their peers, but also fight, tooth and nail, for the best part of the song with deliciously messy consequences! Sounds like a thrilling watch to us. Let us know what you think using #IdolsSA on Twitter!
