The jury is in, and it approves of the judges – Idols SA

The latest season of Idols SA welcomes a new judging panel with a lot of potential.
The new judges and ProVerb.

One of the biggest changes to hit Idols SA in its 18th season is the new judging panel. While the show promises bigger live shows and a revamped look, it is the opinion of the panel that will play the largest role in shaping the outcome of the competition as well as the choices – and thus the careers – of the contestants.

Somizi has been a regular fixture of the show for some time now, although he took a brief time off last year. His return has been met with enthusiasm by the show’s audience, as his personality has become a key factor in the show’s personality. We can expect a lot of “whoo, shem!” over the coming months.

The two remaining spots on the panel are completely new. The first is occupied by Thembi Seete, whose solo career would be enough to justify her position on the panel, but it is likely her contribution to the iconic kwaito group Boom Shaka that has her occupy a place in South African musical royalty. Mzansi Magic audiences will also know her from Gomora, the telenovela that has regularly walked away with awards every year. Her stint as a guest judge last year was met with resounding praise and calls for her appointment as a permanent singing jurist. Their wish has been granted.

The third judging spot goes to JR – a rapper and entrepreneur who has made his mark on the local musical landscape and succeeded in making the circle bigger, as it were. His involvement in various strata of the entertainment industry – from creator to executive – gives him a unique point of view from which to advise Idols SA hopefuls, which is the whole point.

With the launch of the new season just over a week away, we’re looking forward to seeing how the new panel will shape the coming few months of music.

Idols SA season 18 will be available on Mzansi Magic at 17:30 on Sundays. You can follow us on our assorted social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
