Mpilo's road – Idols SA

We hate saying goodbye.
Mpilwenhle performing

This season has been a competitive one. There’s been more than enough talent to go around, and that means that we’ve seen exceptional contestants be beaten. We’ll be releasing an article about this very matter over the coming week but suffice it to say that Mpilwenhle will definitely be featuring in that story.

Sunday was Mpilwenhle’s last appearance on Idols SA, having made it to the Top 3. It’s certainly an achievement in the competition, as it provided her with the opportunity to work with the team at Kalawa Jazmee Records and release her first single. On top of that, JR has already indicated that he would be more than happy to produce her music should she not win the competition, so her being knocked out might not be the bitter pill than it otherwise might have been.

Let’s review Mpilwenhle’s time in the competition, and we’ll start the story where it starts – the audition.

Obviously, that audition was more than enough to get her through to Theatre Week, and once she was there, she wasted no time in proving that her performance hadn’t been a fluke.

And just like that – she had made it to the big time: the live shows. As one of the Top 12, she would be among the first crop of contestants to perform in front of a proper audience since the dark days that marked the Covid-19 pandemic. It was time for South Africa to get to know who she was.

For her first live show, Mpilo was teamed up with Presss, who was both her mentor and her duet partner:

About a fortnight after that came the performance she would see as the big one from her time in the competition – the one she would have sung again had she received enough votes to make it into the Top 2.

By now, audiences had come to know that Mpilwenhle’s voice could move over complex compositions like a stream over rocks, and her next few performances only made that all the clearer.

Over the weeks, Mpilwenhle really has racked up the performances, so we won’t list all of them here – you’re more than welcome to check out her profile on the site. Me must, however, include her last live performance on the show from this past Sunday – her first ever single released to the public:

As said, that was – sadly – her final performance for Idols SA fans. We needed to say goodbye, and we did it with this last interview.

We cannot wait to hear this woman in future, which we’re sure we will.
