On most nights, brazen robbers wielding pangas and guns stalk their streets, breaking in and terrorising the community in their homes. But are these just opportunistic criminals or are they recruits from gangs entrenched in Gqeberha’s inner city? From drug dealing to gun smuggling, the biggest city in the Eastern Cape has long been wracked by criminal enterprises vying for turf. Now, similarly violent operators are making the rural outskirts their stronghold. Josh Crickmay’s story could have ended quite differently were it not for the unique and life-altering intervention of his parents, Kathy and Andrew. When their son - just 15 - became violent and endured bouts of severe depression, eventually dropping out of school, they sought medical help. After a year filled with hospital visits, Josh was diagnosed with high-functioning autism, a condition on the spectrum that affects the ability to communicate and socialise. The diagnosis was the turning point for Kathy and Andrew who decided that saving their only child meant taking drastic steps as a family. They quit their jobs to take him on a “Birding Big Year”: 365 days to spot and document 1000 species of birds. And so began a year of adventure that would eventually save Josh and provide him with much-needed purpose. In the leafy suburbs of Pretoria, there’s a growing tide of mistrust and frustration as a once-respected chartered accountant finds herself in the midst of a forensic investigation. Her disheartened clients allege disturbing delays and puzzling bank withdrawals in the winding up of deceased estates. The investigator is sifting through mountains of paperwork and bank accounts, tracking transactions that link this sophisticated, jet-setting professional and her bookkeeper to a web of hidden irregularities. These allegedly include forged signatures and stolen identities, mysterious changes in company papers and unexplained cash withdrawals and deposits. But this alleged scamster wasn’t just taking from any client: she seemingly targeted those at their most vulnerable – long-time clients and friends dealing with the passing of a loved one. While both the accountant and the bookkeeper have gone to ground, they blame each other for the crimes and misdemeanours of which they stand accused. Carte Blanche investigates.

When former President Jacob Zuma accused senior state prosecutor Billy Downer of leaking confidential medical information to journalist Karyn Maughan, she couldn’t have imagined how severely it would impact her life. For several months, Zuma pursued a private prosecution of both, placing Maughan in the crosshairs of some of the former president’s staunchest supporters. In court, Downer and Maughan emerged victorious. But she endured such violent online vitriol that she was forced to retreat to her family home. As a journalist, she’s not alone. It seems South Africa’s judiciary is being used as a battleground to harass and intimidate journalists and prevent them from doing their work.
