DStv Stream breaks live-sport streaming record

South Africa's long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup 2026 delivered a record-breaking streaming moment for DStv, with more than 900 000 viewers watching Bafana Bafana's Group A opener against Mexico simultaneously on DStv Stream on Thursday.

Key highlights:

  • 900 000+ concurrent streams, a new live-sport record for DStv Stream
  • Nearly double the previous peak of close to 500 000, set during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 final
  • South Africa's first FIFA World Cup appearance in 16 years, and the first time all 104 matches are available to DStv Access customers from R99 per month

The viewing numbers reflect the extraordinary appetite for football across the continent, with a record ten African nations - including South Africa - competing at the 2026 tournament for the first time. For South African fans in particular, the occasion carried special weight as Bafana Bafana made their first World Cup appearance in 16 years. Thursday's opener against Mexico carried particular weight: it was a repeat fixture of the 2010 World Cup opening match in Johannesburg, the occasion that gave the world Siphiwe Tshabalala's iconic goal and made South Africa the first African nation to host the tournament.

The result went against Bafana, but the campaign is far from over. South Africa face Czechia and South Korea in their remaining group matches, with a place in the knockout stage still within reach.

The record is also an early signal that opening FIFA World Cup 2026 coverage to DStv Access customers is reaching a broader audience than any previous tournament.
