Miss World Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica will join Miss Supranational Chanique Rabe of Namibia and Miss Universe Andrea Meza of Mexico when Miss South Africa 2021 is crowned at the Grand Arena, GrandWest in Cape Town.
Thanks to overwhelming public demand a further 200 tickets for people wanting to watch the pageant live have been made available.
Before Singh was crowned Miss World, she was a student pursuing bachelor’s a degree in women’s studies in Florida in the US with aspirations to one day become a medical doctor.
She talks about Miss World: “When they say beauty pageant, we’re talking about Beauty with a Purpose. They’re more concerned about what you’re advocating for and if you can articulate what you’re passionate about and how you can help us change the world.”
She has visited South Africa once before, shortly after she was crowned: "I was invited there by Chief Zwelivelile "Mandla" Mandela, Nelson Mandela’s eldest grandson, to celebrate his mother’s 70th birthday in Mvezo and donate 1 300 pairs of shoes as part of Beauty with a Purpose’s continued support of local schools and children. I also got to sing to her Etta James’ At Last, and speak about Beauty with a Purpose and its initiatives.”
She will be accompanied on her visit by Julia Morley, chairperson and CEO of Miss World Organisation. She is the widow of Miss World founder Eric Morley, who organised from the first pageant in 1951 and until his death in 2000.
Says Stephanie Weil, CEO of the Miss South Africa Organisation: “We are determined to show the world that the Miss South Africa pageant embraces the spirit of ubuntu. We have three queens coming to this country to meet our own reigning queen Miss South Africa Shudufhadzo Musida – who will be competing on the Miss World stage in November – and see who will inherit her mantle. The world is opening up to both local and international tourists. South Africa is open for business again and we are delighted to be able to show its beauty to an international audience.”
