Big Brother Mzansi season 4 is fast approaching and Biggie is gearing up to deliver the most disruptive season yet, with twists when you least expect them, and unpredictable housemates. This is a season that promises to create gag worthy moments that will be etched in pop culture for years to come. As we start counting down to the premier of the new season of Big Brother Mzansi, here’s a look at a few unprecedented moments in TV history:
Denise Zimba
Let’s throw it back a little. The year is 2013 when Denise first made it to our screens on Fly Chix on Vuzu and it was not long until she would present on Vuzu’s V Entertainment. She brought on an authentic vibe to presenting in Mzansi, the streets were eating it up. There was no moment that was predictable where she was concerned. From random dance breaks to the peculiar accents, the questionable Madiba impersonation to the iconic wig pull on live TV, Denise was the moment. If “S’ya Mosha” was a person, she would epitomise its embodiment. 😆
Evodia 'Madame' Mogase (Showmax)
The Real Housewives of Johannesburg’s debut season was monumental reality tv that will forever be etched in our memories, especially for the personalities it gave us. Exhibit A: Evodia. With an introduction like: “There can only be one queen in a beehive. That’s me. Don’t address me by any name. Its Madame to you.” A season of diva clashes was already foreshadowed. Madame’s presence was undeniable in all the scenes she featured in, largely because she made it known. If she was not quarrelling with Christall, she was wined and dined in the world’s finest fashion, all while delivering the perfect one-liners every housewife wishes for. Where disrespect was concerned, she was the stop nonsense. She may have only given us one season, but she will always be mother.
Zodwa 'Mzozozo' (Mzansi Magic)
Sannah Mchunu brought us Zodwa when she joined Gomora. Zodwa pulled at the nation’s heartstrings as we watched her grow from an unfit alcoholic mother to one who is more than capable of being an honourable one. It is not just her heartwarming progression that drew audiences, but her unique use of the English language. Whether she was depressed over her “long life,” or was giving out advice like “life is like rice”, Zodwa’s on-air presence had audiences rolling on the floor with laughter, and her one-liners are yet to escape many’s daily vocabulary.
Zozibini Tunzi (1Magic)
The nation’s forever Miss Universe first won us over when she was crowned Miss South Africa on Women’s Day in 2019, and hers was a year of reign written in the stars. She stepped on the Miss SA stage as the most authentic version of herself, and she carried that same energy when she jetted off to Miss Universe just three months later. Tunzi did not only represent her undeniable natural beauty, but her presence on the international stage served as a platform for her to dismantle international beauty standards, forever marking her as a beauty queen of substance. Her winning answer made waves across the world when she stressed the importance of taking up space and cementing one’s self, and to take up space she did.
Springboks (SuperSport)
The four-time Rugby World Cup champions had an unprecedented journey to their historic victory in France last year. 🏉 The then defending champions were a major talking point in the world of rugby for their unique style of play with the 7-1 bench split. Rassie Erasmus’s tactic was simple, send in the forwards to demolish the opponent, and replace those forwards with more forwards from the bench to ensure a consistent whipping. The Boks kept everyone on the edge of their seats, and not in a good way. While they played unpredictable rugby in Paris, the crowd spirit back home was electric, with the nation dressed in their best Bokke regalia, united in one voice by igwijo. The boys in green and gold challenged perceptions, and disrupted all known rugby conventions. One thing’s for sure, they had one mandate that led them to victory: S’ya Mosha!
Somizi Mhlongo (Mzansi Magic)
Somgaga, he can do whatever! The choreographer and media personality has enjoyed rare longevity in the entertainment industry, and if its trajectory is anything to go by, he won’t be stopping soon, not that we want him to. Somizi joined Idols SA in 2015 and made an indelible mark. “Woo shem!” fast became his trademark, and pop culture caught on to it, adopting the phrase for themselves, testament to his influence. For him, “woo shem” was a way to express an immaculate performance, for the contestants it evolved into the epitome of a compliment, and it was just a vibey moment for the live audience to take part in.
Sandra Stein (1Magic)
The lawyer who is the envy of it all. Sandra Stein’s (Shannon Esra) dominance in the courtroom spans across various dramas and telenovelas. She was responsible for the fate of many of our favourite television villains’ fate when they faced the wrath of the law, but the court hath no fury like Sandra. With the exception of Lindiwe Dikana’s recent case, Sandra’s acquittal rate is unmatched.
With a history of monumental figures who move the needle and disrupt in their own rights, it's clear that South Africa 🇿🇦 is home to a plethora of authentic personalities, and the Big Brother Mzansi season 4 housemates are expected to move the needle even further.
