Mzansi has spoken! Gomora is the Most Popular TV Soap/Telenovela, as voted for by the public in the 15th annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs).

The first-time SAFTAs nominee was nominated in five categories: Best Achievement in Directing – Telenovela, Best Achievement in Scriptwriting – Telenovela, Best Achievement in Original Music/Score – Telenovela, Best Telenovela, and Most Popular TV Soap/Telenovela.

In addition to its Most Popular TV Soap/Telenovela win, the telenovela also scooped the Best Achievement in Directing – Telenovela award. This is a huge deal for both the cast and crew, who took to the Twitter streets to celebrate their win.

Gomora was up against some of the industry’s big names, the likes of The River, Isibaya, The Queen, Legacy, Scandal, Uzalo, Skeem Saam and 7de Laan to name a few.

Here’s how Gomora has had Mzansi glued to their screens since its debut last year:

It’s gripping storyline:

Just when you think you can almost tell what’s going to happen next, iVili Liya Jika! That’s Gomora for you! Always keeping us at the edge of our seats.

It’s all-star cast:

Many of the cast members need no introduction. The likes of industry heavyweights Connie Chiume, Katlego Danke, Zolisa Xaluva and Thembi Seete are soaring in their leading roles. It’s also the occasional special feature of some of Mzansi favourite actors/actresses, the like of Ernest Msibi who played Mohato, Nonhle Thema who played Cleo, and its latest addition, Israel Matseke–Zulu who plays Don.

The awesome soundtrack:

Nothing tells a story like music, and the Gomora soundtrack does just that! The selection of local tracks always gets Mzansi excited.

Congratulatory messages have poured in since on Saturday night. Here’s what Tweeps had to say:

Season 2 kicked off on a high note on the 26th of April 2021, and it promises even more drama and intrigue. We can’t wait to see what happens next!
