It was the long-awaited fulfilment of a promise to those in need of mental healthcare services in a province desperate for psychiatric facilities. But five years after it was finally opened, whistleblowers have come forward describing a facility that’s in urgent need of attention. And for once, a lack of funds isn’t the problem. Documents and images obtained by Carte Blanche show how the mismanagement of funds by the Northern Cape Department of Health and the hospital are eating away at the budget meant for vulnerable patients. It’s a world first for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and a novel way for young patients and former patients to tell their own stories to peers who are still admitted to the hospital. Carte Blanche meets the award-winning young RX Radio broadcasters who say radio has a therapeutic effect and helps them deal with their chronic conditions and the healthcare they undergo, sometimes for years. Ngwelezana Hospital - Paediatric Burns Unit

Thanks once again to a major donation of over R14.3 million from South32’s Richards Bay Hillside Aluminium, CBMADT has been able to once again support the young burns patients at Ngwelezana Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal. A vacant lot alongside the Paediatric Burns Inpatient Unit has been used to construct the dedicated Paediatric Burns Outpatient Department. [[link-to:galleries-2573]]
