In 2008, a fractured ANC government established the Hawks as the country’s new, elite crime-fighting unit. Tasked with investigating organised and financial crime, as well as corruption, the unit has often operated outside the public gaze. In the last 16 years, its highly specialised members have tracked down and arrested some of the country’s most wanted criminals. And now, a new book called Hunting with the Hawks lifts the veil on a unit with a surprisingly high success rate. Here the sale of counterfeit goods – popular luxury clothing brands, sneakers and even pharmaceuticals – has exploded. Cheap knockoffs are easy to come by and, because of its shipping routes, South Africa is one of the biggest markets for fake goods on the continent - large counterfeit consignments often move through the country undetected. Naudé was arriving at her hotel parking lot in Durban North when two gunmen opened fire, wounding her three times in the upper body, neck and face: all in broad daylight. Naudé survived, but she is still in a critical condition in hospital. This brazen assassination attempt is just one in a long line of hits on prominent investigators: detectives, liquidators, and even city officials. Powerful suspects are no longer simply silencing whistleblowers, but setting their sights on investigators as well and threatening the rule of law.
