Idols SA Season 11 kicked into high gear at the State Theatre in Pretoria as the Top 10 started competing in earnest for the public's votes.

The theme for this important Spectacular was “Judges’ Choice”, with Randall Abrahams, Gareth Cliff, Unathi Msengana, and Somizi Mhlongo submitting songs for each contestant to choose from. The contestants chose their favourite song to perform, but they had no idea which judge submitted which song – that was only revealed during the show, right before each performance.

The contestants also performed in the order of their unique voting numbers for the competition, and first up was Elwira Standili (22) from Worcester, with the Mariah Carey power ballad “Without You”, which was suggested for her by Somizi Mhlongo.

Gareth pointed out that this is such a familiar and demanding song that people would have high expectations of her. “We were all hoping that you would do well,” he told Elwira, “and I think you did. Well done.” Somizi commented that he was impressed with how Elwira maintained her lower register and stuck to the correct key.

“Plus,” he added, “you gave me those ‘chilli-babas’ ...” But Unathi felt the exact opposite – she thought Elwira’s lower register was weak.  And Randall did not like the performance at all. “You’re standing there like you’re not enjoying yourself at all,” he chided Elwira, and noted that the other contestants would do better because they’d be smiling.

Fans can vote for Elwira via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing her voting number 01 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.

Elwira’s unique contestant number is 01, which she will keep for the duration of her stay in Idols SA Season 11.

Gareth Cliff chose the Grammy-winning Macy Gray hit “I Try” for 24-year-old Karabo Mogane from Nelspruit, and he loved the performance. “Great song, great choice!” he joked. “You are on a roll!” Somizi praised. “Your eye is on the ball.”

“You are extremely anointed, said Unathi. “I couldn’t take my eyes off you.” And Randall agreed that Karabo looked extremely at ease on the massive State Theatre Opera stage.

Fans can vote for Karabo via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing his voting number 02 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.

Karabo’s unique contestant number is 02, which he will keep for the duration of his stay in Idols SA Season 11.

Gareth was up again with his choice for 22-year-old Amanda Antony from Port Elizabeth: Jessie Ware’s “Say You Love Me”.

“Yup. You did it,” he commented happily on her performance. “That’s what I wanted to hear from you. I wanted you to make your mark this week.” Somizi said it was about time that Amanda realised where her true strength lies. Unathi thought Amanda had proven that she deserved to be on this stage. Randall noted that there was something in the vein of Joan Armatrading in how Amanda approached that song, “completely different to how Jessie Ware does it,” he said. “And that’s a good thing.”

Fans can vote for Amanda via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing her voting number 03 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.

Amanda’s unique contestant number is 03, which she will keep for the duration of her stay in Idols SA Season 11.

Siphelele Ngcobo (24) from Inanda thought Lira’s “Soul In Mind” was Unathi Msengana’s selection for him, but it was in fact Somizi's song.  Gareth’s only criticism of the performance was that Siphelele should just take care to pronounce every word properly. “Every word in that song matters,” he cautioned.

Somizi thought he was an “old soul”, and Unathi thought it was the perfect song choice for Siphelele. “The way you perform South African music is laudable,” she said. Randall had some problems with phrasing early on in the song, and he also thought Siphelele might struggle to get the votes – “not because of the singing, but because of the charisma,” he said.

Fans can vote for Siphelele via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing his voting number 04 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.

Siphelele’s unique contestant number is 04, which he will keep for the duration of his stay in Idols SA Season 11.

Randall Abrahams’s only Judges’ Choice contribution to the evening was Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” for Dineo Moseki (21) from Vryburg, and it won her a standing ovation from Somizi. But Gareth said he was not totally persuaded. “There was a lack of energy in the beginning,” he said. But Somizo thought Dineo demonstrated “what showmanship is”. Unathi agreed. “That was insane,” she said. “For tonight, my job here is done,” a happy Randall said simply.

Fans can vote for Dineo via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing her voting number 05 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.

Dineo’s unique contestant number is 05, which she will keep for the duration of her stay in Idols SA Season 11.

Somizi chose some Michael Jackson for 21-year-old Rhema Varrie from Alberton, his Number 1 hit, “Man In The Mirror”, which had all the judges seat-dancing! Gareth called it a first-class performance, “and I saw how much you love performing, and that makes me happy,” he added. “Hallerlujer!” Somizi praised. He loved the tone of the song, he said, “and this time it was your age!” he complimented Rhema. Unathi pointed out how even the Idols SA band – some of the best musicians working in the country today – loved his performance. “By holding back you actually had a far more powerful performance,” Randall agreed approvingly.

Fans can vote for Rhema via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing his voting number 06 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.

Rhema’s unique contestant number is 06, which he will keep for the duration of his stay in Idols SA Season 11.

The powerful George Michael ballad “I Can’t Make You Love Me” was Somizi’s choice for Lungisa Xhamela (24) from Langa in the Cape.

“I didn’t expect such a beautiful performance,” Gareth said sincerely. “You focused, and you demanded attention, and you deserved it because those vocals were beautiful,” Somizi said happily. “Your vocal range is just magnificent,” Unathi agreed. Randall thought it was a really good performance and he advised Lungisa to keep giving memorable performances.

Fans can vote for Lungisa via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing his voting number 07 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.

Lungisa’s unique contestant number is 07, which he will keep for the duration of his stay in Idols SA Season 11.

Gareth chose the Rihanna hit “Take A Bow” for 20-year-old Nadia Herbst from Paarl and he was very happy with the result. “I’m very, very pleased,” he told Nadia. But Somizi thought it was a bit of a safe performance. Unathi thought the song suited Nadia very well and that she is finally beginning to believe in herself. “I loved your performance, well done, darling,” she said reassuringly. But Randall didn’t think it was a solid all-round performance. “To my mind it was a bit flaky,” he said dismissively.

Fans can vote for Nadia via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing her voting number 08 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.

Nadia’s unique contestant number is 08, which she will keep for the duration of her stay in Idols SA Season 11.

The youngest competitor in Idols SA Season 11, 16-year-old Loyiso Gijana from Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape, was up next with Emeli Sande’s “Next To Me”, suggested for him by Somizi. “Excellent song choice by Somizi, but your interpretation is what made it great,” said Gareth. “Keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll be in the Top 2.” Somizi could not believe such confidence and power in someone so young. “Performance of the night,” said Unathi. Randall was impressed that Loyiso never loses sight of the fact that he’s in a competition.

Fans can vote for Loyiso via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing his voting number 09 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.

Loyiso’s unique contestant number is 09, which he will keep for the duration of his stay in Idols SA Season 11.

Somizi was also responsible for the final song of the night, Mmatema Moremi (23) from Limpopo performing the spirited Tina Turner classic, “River Deep, Mountain High”. Gareth said she looked and sounded like one of the classic singers from the sixties and she gave him goosebumps. “You are wiping the floor ... you are ‘vryfing’ the floor with the other contestants, my child! God has blessed you,” Somizi exclaimed. He placed her on the same level as Ms Turner herself and Céline Dion’s interpretation of that song. Unathi said Mmatema is untouchable. “You must be unapologetic about your gift,” she said.

“Earlier Unathi said someone’s performance was her performance of the night,” said Randall, “but it ain’t over until Mmatema sings ...”

Fans can vote for Mmatema via USSD by dialing *120*33033# (Calls are charged at R1,50 per minute, limited to 200 votes per cellphone number); by SMSing her voting number 10 to 37400 (SMS's are charged at R1.50/SMS, limited to 100 votes per cellphone number); or for free via WeChat (100 times per cellphone number); or for free on the official mobile site or Idols SA website or at www.mnet.co.za/idolsSA,100 times per cellphone number for each valid voting period.

Mmatema’s unique contestant number is 10, which she will keep for the duration of her stay in Idols SA Season 11.

Six of the songs performed tonight were suggestions from Somizi Mhlongo, three came from Gareth Cliff, and one from Randall Abrahams.
