During this week’s Sunday Night Movie poll we asked our viewers which of these possible facts about the film Wild Mountain Thyme were true.
We’ve got the answer right here!
Wild Mountain Thyme (2020)
The film starring Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan has been widely criticised, especially by Irish communities for its bad Irish accents. While the romance film is set in Ireland, the countrymen were far from impressed with the casts’ accents that the phrase "Oh Jesus" started trending. Even Dornan, who is Northern Irish, wasn't safe, with one fan tweeting "The saddest part about the Wild Mountain Thyme trailer is that Jamie Dornan is an actual Irish person."
This isn’t the only film that has received backlash for bad movie accents, however, as Hollywood has long been criticised for using exaggerated accents to push racial stereotypes.
Breakfast At Tiffany’s (1961)
Mickey Rooney’s exaggerated Japanese accent with sibilant sounds, alongside taped eyelids and buckteeth in the portrayal of landlord Mr. Yunioshi, left many critics with a bad taste in their mouths up until this very day. Six years before his death, Rooney expressed regret about playing the role, saying he wouldn't have done it had he known it would offend people.
Captain Corelli's Mandolin. (2001)
Nicholas Cage’s Italian accent got ripped to shreds in the film, with The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw saying:
"What a droopy, disappointing film this is. It has some of the unhappiest casting to be seen and dodgiest accents to be heard in the cinema, the worst offender being the barrel-chested, horse-faced Nicolas Cage as a captain in the Italian army."
Blood Diamond (2006)
The jury is still out on this one, while some think he tried, South African comedian and Daily Show host Trevor Noah had a go at Leonardo DiCaprio’s attempt at a South African accent on the film. He tweeted a segment from his show where he stated:
"Tiffany is moving toward ethical diamond sourcing, but nothing will erase the horror of Leo DiCaprio's accent in 'Blood Diamond.'" In the video, he said DiCaprio sounded like "a drunk Australian"
