We are in the midst of comic book movie mania, which makes us even more excited to be watching Thor: Ragnarok at M-Net Movies Night Out.

Before we plunge back into all things Asgardian with Thor, family and friends, here are ten things you need to know about the next instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

  1. Itโ€™s directed by Taika Waititi: the New Zealand film director was nominated for an Oscar in 2005 for Best Live Action Short, for his film Two Cars, One Night.
  2. Thor: Ragnarok includes a highly-anticipated crossover with the Hulk/Bruce Banner. While the Hulk has had a standalone movie in the MCU, it does not feature Mark Ruffalo. Will they make another one? We do so love Ruffalo in the role!
  3. The movie was shot in Australia and features two Aussie actors in the main cast: Chris Hemsworth and Cate Blanchett.
  4. The rest of the main cast is from all over the place. It includes two English actors (Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba), three Americans (Mark Ruffalo, Jeff Goldblum and Tessa Thompson), one New Zealander (Karl Urban) and one Welshman (Anthony Hopkins).
  5. The movieโ€™s events are set two years after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
  6. And it sets up the next big MCU ensemble movie, Avengers: Infinity War.
  7. Zoรซ Bell, whom you may recognise from Tarantino films like Death Proof and The Hateful Eight, is Cate Blanchetโ€™s stunt double. Bell has also doubled for Uma Thurman, Sharon Stone, and Diane Kruger.
  8. Cate Blanchettโ€™s character is Hela: the first female villain to appear in the MCU.
  9. Roughly, very roughly, translated ragnarok means โ€œthe end of everythingโ€.
  10. Multiple comic books inspired the storyline, including Planet Hulk.
