A brrrrilliant winter on DStv Access in July

DStv Access has it all! From kisses & comedy to sharks & snakes, and all kinds of South African drama, real and imagined.

Mzansi Wethu (DStv Channel 163) launches an epic slate of shows this July when they bring us their first-ever local drama series, Isibopho – a tale of corruption and greed wearing the mask of traditional cultural practices. And if you love your classic Mzansi Wethu reality series, stay with Access for Boss Ladies Season 2 and new intervention series Umndende, which confronts the kind of social grant abusers who steal gogo’s pension.

National Geographic Wild (DStv Channel 182) is going local with the brand-new Snakes In The City Season 8, which sees local gal Mbali Mtshali join the snake wrangling crew in KZN, and the international Shark Fest will feature loads of new research and footage from South Africa’s shark scientists. Science lovers will also have a great time with the new TLC (DStv Channel 135) series Body Parts, which focuses on the work of prosthetics maker Allison Vest.

Isibopho Season 1

In the South African cultural practice, “unego”, a widow remarries into her late husband’s family. But when widowed Thandi Ndlovu’s (Zethu Dlomo) overbearing mother-in-law is Onica (Slindile Nodangala) sets her up to marry her surviving son Sgoloza (Sicelo Dlamini), Sgoloza decides to marry and murder Thandi as a quick way to take back the money that Thandi has inherited. And the whole Ndlovu family is wading in dark waters thanks to rhino poaching and fafi/mochina (gambling based on dream interpretation).

Bodybuilder and snake enthusiast Mbali Mtshali joins Siouxsie and Simon as an apprentice as they gear up for a new scorching, snake wrangling Summer in Snake City – Durban – and KZN. Someone has a black mamba in the mattress (not a euphemism), there’s a croc on the block, a puff adder in a toilet, a snake who’s going to preschool. It’s time for a safe serpent shakedown and relocation.
