Are you ready for another slice of Koek, the award-winning dark comedy starring Cindy Swanepoel, coming to DStv Stream from 9 June.

Award-winning crime comedy Koek S2 returns to DStv Stream

“If you want to dance with the devil, be ready for hell ...”

The gruesome escapades of a suburban housewife and a ruthless crime boss rage on in the second season of Wolflight Films’ crime comedy Koek. And just like the multi-award-winning first season – which garnered praise from viewers and critics alike, plus an International Emmy nod – it takes you on a wild rollercoaster ride with plenty of action and bloodshed.

Koek’s first season was a streaming hit on Showmax, but from 9 June, the series has a brand-new home. The second season is exclusively available on DStv Stream (in the Showmax section), on the DStv Premium, Compact Plus and Compact bouquets.

Cindy Swanepoel resumes her role as Christelle Smit, but she is certainly not the same Cape Town stay-at-home mom and housewife who lost everything after she discovered the infidelity of her philandering husband, Adrian (Stian Bam), and stumbled into the Koeksusters strip club.

The story resumes with Christelle struggling to rebuild her life while an ugly divorce case is in progress. Her dreams of resuming her medical career and caring for her daughter as a single mother, lie in tatters. Her ex, however, walked away (largely) unscathed after Christelle harvested his kidney for revenge. Now, he is also suing for custody of their daughter, Stella (Izebella Louw), and is determined to deprive Christelle of everything. When Adrian appoints a ruthless attorney to swing the case in his favour, a chain of events follows that forces Christelle back into the underworld.

It is such an honour to revisit this character and to have another season,” said Swanepoel.  “Christelle now? She is edgy, she is dangerous, she is tough as a coffin nail. Don’t mess with her – she’s been through a lot. But she is also vulnerable. What she did in season 1 was intense. It’s not something you just put behind you.”

And as for what viewers can expect from her? “There will be many comedic elements mixed with the serious elements. That is the kind of storytelling I love to do.”

Season 2 also introduces new unsavoury characters, including Frank Opperman as Thinus “Tjoppie” Terreblanche – the most feared crime boss in the Northern Suburbs who rules his carjacking syndicate with an iron fist from his wheelchair. Despite his declining health, Tjoppie absolutely refuses to hand over the reins to his useless, wimpy son, Tiny (De Klerk Oelofse), or his manipulative sixth wife, Veronika (Leandie du Randt).

For years, Tjoppie’s syndicate and Moekie’s strip club maintained an uneasy peace that respected both their boundaries – and sort-of each other. But when these two crime empires clash over a huge misunderstanding, it threatens to unleash a war that will turn the Tygerberg hills blood red.

Also in the cast are, among others, Ashley de Lange, Clayton Evertson, Jacques Bessenger, Llandi Beeslaar, Vinette Ebrahim, Beer Adriaanse, Amalia Uys, Loren Loubser and Dann-Jacques Mouton.

In the second season, Eva du Preez is a new addition to the team behind the cameras. She joins as editor and co-director alongside the Safta- and Silwerskerm-award-winning showrunner and scriptwriter, Christiaan Olwagen (Kanarie, Recipes for Love & Murder), and the Safta- and Silwerskerm-award-winning director and cinematographer Johannes Pieter Nel (Magda Louw, Die tragiese saak van Pamina Vermaak, Die brug). Eva made her directorial debut on Wyfie and is also known for editing series such as Niggies and Die Nuusmakers.

The first season of Koek, a Showmax Original, enjoyed wide acclaim. In her review, Liny Kruger wrote: “You have never seen such a fantastic comedy in Afrikaans like Koek. Every moment is gripping. [...] The series deserves both local and international recognition. It is the most enjoyable breakneck ride ever on a screen in Afrikaans. It will mess with your head, make you breathe faster, and drive you to the edge of your seat.”

Koek S2 premieres with two episodes on Tuesday, 9 June on DStv Stream Premium, Compact Plus and Compact. Thereafter, one new episode is released weekly.
