There’s a thin red line between cutthroat business deal-makers and throat-cutting cartels. This November, we’ve picked out 10 documentary and drama series about organised crime that cross the line.

10 organised crime highlights on DStv this November

1. NCIS: Tony & Ziva

This NCIS spinoff sees Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) living in Paris, where Tony heads a private security firm, Ziva runs a local school, and the two co-parent their daughter, Tali (Isla Gie). But when Interpol funds go missing, and Tony is framed, the two go on the run together as they – with the help of hacker couple Boris (Maximilian Osinski) and Fruzsi (Anne-Marie Waldeck) – unravel the organised crime conspiracy behind a worldwide cyber attack.

2. Mafia: Most Wanted

This three-part crime documentary series takes us inside a recent power shift in the Mafia, which has seen the powerhouse of organised crime move from Sicily and New York City, to Toronto in Canada, and Calabria in Italy. Look out for exclusive interviews with mob enforcers, never-before-seen archival footage, wiretap recordings, and gritty recreations, as Ndrangheta criminal syndicate insiders who tapped out, and RCMP cops who weaseled their way in, share personal stories.

3. Original Gangsters with Sean Bean

Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean leads us into the world of some of history’s most memorable villains – the real Peaky Blinders, Al Capone, Stephanie St Clair (the Queen of Harlem), the Kray Twins, and “Gentleman Gangster” Billy Hill. Incidents that led to their notoriety are brought to the screen via reenactments, while interviews with historical experts and people who knew them personally add information about their activities, the social situations they exploited, and their psychology.

4. Landman S2

Following oil billionaire Monty Miller’s (Jon Hamm) death in the Season 1 finale, his widow Cami (Demi Moore) approves Monty’s appointment of their long-time fixer Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) as the new president of M-TEX. But Tommy now owes a life debt to drug cartel boss Gallino (Andy Garcia) for killing the henchmen who were torturing him. And the legal line between how the oil business is run and how Gallino rules his cartel is going to start looking razor-thin.

5. Power Book II: Ghost

Rich kid drug dealer Tariq St Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr) and his college “project partner” Brayden Weston (Gianni Paolo) start the season with a $100 000 bounty on each of their heads from drug lord Noma Asaju (Caroline Chikezie), while crime queenpin Monet’s (Mary J Blige) sons Dru (Lovell Adams-Gray) and Cane (Woody McClain), and Cane’s love Effie (Alix Lapri), are also out to get Tariq for supposedly killing Monet in the Season 3 finale. Time to run!

6. Law & Order: Organized Crime

Senior Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) tackles a variety of crime cartels in this spinoff series. This season we’ll see him go undercover as a trucker to gather intelligence on an international smuggling and trafficking ring, reconnect with an informant in Italy to find out what’s happening in a major New York crime family, try to find the head of the Camorra, tangle with Mexican cartels, and join a counter terrorism unit to investigate deadly “art activist” movement The Collective.

7. MobLand

Created by The Day of the Jackal’s Ronan Bennett and co-directed by Guy Ritchie, this gangland drama follows London’s Harrigan crime family, led by Conrad (Pierce Brosnan) and Maeve Harrigan (Helen Mirren). Their fixer, Harry Da Souza (Tom Hardy), must navigate the rising tensions with the rival Stevenson syndicate, led by Richie Stevenson (Geoff Bell). And as hostilities escalate, a full-blown street war looms – threatening to spill beyond London to the Harrigans’ posh country estate.

8. Gangs of London Season 1-4

If you loved MobLand and would like another perspective, try this action-drama about an undercover cop. Elliot Finch (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù) starts Gangs of London as a mere footsoldier in the Wallace family gang. He’s so irrelevant that the Wallaces don’t even know his face when they pass him in the street. But he methodically infiltrates the heart of London’s criminal networks, and by Season 4 he has a seat at the table with the city’s most powerful underworld figures.

9. The Penguin

If you didn’t get through HBO’s award-winning Batman-verse crime drama mini-series, now is your chance to catch up. Gotham’s underworld is in crisis at the start of this show, which picks up just after the events of The Batman (2022). The Riddler’s murder of Gotham’s biggest mob boss, Carmine Falcone, has created a power vacuum. And Carmine’s right-hand man Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell, in a Golden Globe-winning performance), is prepared to backstab and scheme his way to becoming the dictator of crime.

10. The Sopranos

21 Emmy wins later, it’s a classic for a reason! Come inside a New Jersey Mafia family headed by Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini). After suffering a panic attack from the stress of juggling suburban life and his murderous Mafia role, Tony turns to psychiatrist Dr Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) for help. And while he’s breaking down his family trauma from mom Livia (Nancy Marchand) in Melfi’s office, on the street Tony keeps happily breaking heads, handing out bribes, and doing “business”.
