We’d like to dub this, the year of the female MC and we’ll go ahead and allow ourselves. Without polarizing the sexes or feeding into obnoxious divisions, it’s about time we celebrate the rise of these (and more) talented women of Mzansi hip hop right now.

Motswako’s export Fifi Cooper San caught our ears with her plenty-fold virtuoso. She kills the mic on every sphere with original raps, alluring vocals and a flair for the language.

Her collaboration with Kwesta and JR on Putsununu as well as her Kisses number with AB Crazy have seen her living in our minds, rent free.

She burst into the thick of things with Ice Cream and had us bobbing our heads to it. Only four time South Africa Hip Hop awards winner Gigi Lamayne can use ice cream as the subject for a Kwaito inspired gangser rap song.

She cites Jean Grae and Tupac Shakur right through to Bob Marley and Brenda Fassie as her influences and her references reflect in her stylistics.

Cava this!

Darling MTV VJ flipped the script on her fans when she walked into Cash Time’s studios and busted a rhyme, and another one, until we wondered why she hadn’t gone into the booth sooner!

With endorsements from the lands biggest names in rap including AKA, KiD and K.O, the self-made Skhanda Queen does things her own way.

She just dropped the video to Don’t Panic, in which she teams up with DJ Speedsta, this week. Look out for it on Channel O.

Expression is the cornerstone of hip hop and new comer Rouge is going to be a game changer of note. In a category where female rap is often sexualized, the girl has agency on fleek, excelling at speaking her mind over a clever arrangement of beatboxing.

If her track BUA, with Reason doesn’t convince you of this then My Moment will leave you enamoured.

Last on our radar, but only for now, is the dazzling Nadia Nakai. Having broken onto the scene in 2014 she continues to earn her rep as a notable MC. She featured in Riky Ricks Amantombazane and put in a whole lot of work before dropping the fresh Saka Wena.

We can’t wait for her debut album!
