There’s less than a month to go before Reyka starts. Amongst the many reasons to watch M-Net’s new crime drama, is the fantastic cast. Familiar faces abound and you’re sure to have spotted more than one of them a few times.
Reyka’s cast has so much to offer, both in the show and beyond. If you’re not acquainted already, check them out in an array of excellent and entertaining local and international movies and series. You’ll even see several of them in an LOL comedy or two, while their more dramatic turns will set just the right tone for Reyka.
Reyka’s leading lady, and title character, is played by the renowned actress, Kim Engelbrecht. Many will remember her from her days on Isidingo, but she’s since racked up an incredible resume both at home and abroad. As Reyka Gama she’ll tackle a dark and complex role, so if you want to see her in something a little lighter, check her out in the rom-com Konfetti.
Game of Thrones fans will be well aware of Iain Glen. After all, he did play one of the longest-lasting characters, Ser Jorah Mormont. If upstairs-downstairs drama is more your cup of tea, you’ll have spotted him as Sir Richard Carlisle in Downton Abbey’s second season. The good news is they’re both available to watch on Showmax, so you can double down on a double bill of the Scottish actor, before watching him as Angus Speelman in Reyka.
Anna-Mart van der Merwe
Anna-Mart van der Merwe has graced South Africa’s stages and screens with her talent and poise for many years. As Elsa Meyer, Reyka’s mother, she’ll deal with the loss of her daughter after she’s kidnapped. In the dramedy Die Koue Kos, Skat she deals with loss and heartache of a different kind. If you’re a fan of revenge flicks, make sure you check it out.
Another South African acting veteran forming part of the cast is Hamilton Dhlamini. A versatile actor, he’s tackled multiple genres and roles. His prolific career means you’ll be spoilt for choice if you want to watch some of his previous work before watching him as Hector Zwane on Reyka. Catch the actor in Loving Thokoza, Thandeka, and Faith Like Potatoes on Showmax. We also highly recommend Five Fingers for Marseilles, which you can watch on DStv.
Equally prolific and versatile is Desmond Dube, whom we can’t wait to watch portraying Pastor Zik in Reyka. For now, lighten the mood with his role in The Adventures of Supermama on DStv or get into the mood of grit and drama for Reyka, by watching him in the thriller, Impunity.
Reyka’s going to double down on the action and thrills and Thando Thabete will be in the thick of it as Nandi Cele. For a lighter note before the show starts, check her out in the rom-coms Love Lives Here and Mrs. Right Guy.
Hands up if you miss Nirvana on Legacy? We thought we were lucky when we saw Leeanda Reddy was returning to our screens via her character, Alia Sewsunker, in Reyka. And then we got doubly lucky when Nirvana popped back into Legacy! If you missed her return, catch up on the episode with DStv. Speaking of Legacy, Camilla Waldman also joined the cast this week, as Jonno's mother Dimitra, and will also be seen in Reyka, so keep your eyes peeled.
We’re all set for thrills on Reyka, but if you want thrills of a more haunting kind, you have to watch the thriller series Dam on Showmax. It features Gerald Steyn, who’s set to appear in Reyka and whom many will remember from Trackers and Lioness.
Nkosi, who plays Chief Msomi in Reyka, can also be seen in Five Fingers for Marseilles. For lighter fare, watch him in Blessers on DStv or get into sci-fi mode and watch him at the beginning of the excellent District 9, accompanying Wikus on his eviction mission.
