Can creatures be saved?

Between the Ukraine and Russia war and the ongoing pandemic, it is good to have a reprieve from reality. On top of our list is watching A Discovery of Witches.

As the title suggests, yes, there are witches on the show.ย ๐Ÿ‘ย  And there are vampires and demons walking among mankind, hidden from human sight by strict laws.ย ๐Ÿ‘ These laws are overseen by the Congregation comprising three vampires, witches, and demons each. See? Allโ€™s fair so far. Okay, not so fair is the covenant, a law forbidding these species to interact, let alone be in romantic relationships. That sounds like some of the apartheid laws that South Africa faced before 1994.ย ๐Ÿ˜”

But wait. All species are going into decline. Vampires are struggling to sire other vampires, witches are losing their powers over the generations, and demons are sinking further into mental health issues. This information is shared by vampire, Matthew de Clermont (Matthew Goode) who is studying the genealogy of creatures to hopefully understand why there is a decline. For that, he also needs an ancient manuscript, called The Book of Life to vampires, demons and witches. However, it is not been seen nor heard of for centuries.

In steps tenured historian/witch Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer). Her interest lies in alchemy and she has renounced the witch part of herself to have a normal life. However, she suddenly retrieves The Book of Life from Oxford Universityโ€™s Bodleian Library. Since she is an acclaimed academic, she knows it as simply manuscript Ashmole 782 and is unable to understand the significance of retrieving such a book. In haste, she hands it back to the librarian, unable to understand what she is seeing.

This unexpected find brings Matthew and Diana together. First an uncomfortable truce, it soon blossoms to challenge the covenant and Congregationโ€™s bigotry.

This sets the scene for three wonderful seasons of the show, based on the All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness. So if you ever mourn losing these amazing characters on screen after youโ€™ve binged on it, sink into the books. Youโ€™ll love them even more. And it is a sure fire way to escape reality.

Watch all three seasons on Showmax.ย ๐Ÿ‘ˆย
