Fast facts: Riky Rick – The Voice SA

Some juicy tidbits on our new, swagalicious #TheVoiceSA Coach!


  • His real name is Rikhado Makhado
  • He was born in KwaMahu is KwaZulu-Natal, but spent much of his childhood in Austria, where he developed his love of sneakers and fashion
  • He was mentored in music by Bongani Fassie, Brenda Fassie’s son
  • His debut track and video were titled “I Need Money” – he’s come a long way!

  • He. Is. Not. Just. A. Rapper! He writes, composes, produces, sings and acts.
  • He also studied film production at AFDA – these skills are on show in the impressionistic 2016 black-and-white short, ‘Exodus’

  • He’s also a pro in front of the camera – we obviously saw this first-hand in episode 1 of The Voice SA, but he also played music producer Mandelic in Mzansi Magic’s Isibaya

  • And he’s regularly seen on the catwalk for brands like Nike and Ben Sherman!

  • He’s not afraid to wear a skirt!

  • Also in 2017, his label Cotton Club Records teamed up with streetwear retailer RHTC in Braamfontein for Cotton Club Merchandise – and the queue to get the merch stretched over 200 metres!
  • In 2018, he teamed up with knitwear designer Laduma Ngxnkolo and launched the Capsule Collection in collaboration with local luxury bag brand Okapi

  • And he just wrapped up the debut edition of Cotton Fest, which blended music and fashion in innovative ways

  • In terms of his music, he really broke through with “Boss Zonke” in 2015 – the popular songs lyric, “Everything I do, they wanna do, they wanna do” has become a popular call-and-response at his gigs

  • He’s in a relationship with the beautiful Bianca Naidoo, with whom he has two kids, a son and daughter – he also has a son from a previous relationship, Malik Daniel Makhado (he appeared on the cover of the 2015 album, ‘Family Values’)

Finally, he is a brand magnet – companies who’ve secured his endorsement include Russian Bear, Vaseline and Woolworths
