- Atticus Shaffer’s character, Brick, is rumoured to have Asperger syndrome or some sort of autism. He also possesses an eidetic memory.
- Patricia Heaton (Frankie Heck) wore a wig for the first four seasons. From Season 5 onward, her real hair has been featured.
- The original pilot episode starred Ricki Lake as Frankie Heck. The only cast member to remain after the pilot is Atticus Shaffer (Brick).
- Mike gets caught singing Boston's "More Than a Feeling" in the car. In Scrubs, Neil Flynn's character "The Janitor" is part of an air band that plays a version of the same Boston hit.
- The character Barry from The Goldbergs makes a cameo. He can be seen giving Axl a high-five and saying "sup bro" at a party while wearing his signature jersey.
- Frankie mentions that Axl only knows a lot about astronomy because he watched Hot Tub Time Machine a lot. Charlie McDermott (Axl) played Chaz in the movie.
- Marsha Mason, who plays Frankie's mother, played Paula McFadden in the 1977 production of The Goodbye Girl. In the 2004 version of the movie, Patricia Heaton plays the same character.
- Sue's birthday is actually inaccurate. She was born on Leap Day, February 29th, which only occurs once every 4 years. To fit her age group and Leap Day, she would've had to have been born in 1996, a leap year. However, this is not the case. Sue celebrated her 16th birthday in 2013, meaning she would have had to have been born in 1997, making her birthday incorrect.
