In 2004 author Jeff Lindsay released the first of a series of novels titled Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Two years later James Manos Jr took inspiration from these books and approached Lindsay to adapt the series for television, and in October 2006 we were introduced to Dexter Morgan played by Michael C. Hall.
Everything led us to believe that Dexter was just a regular forensic investigator with a fascination for blood spatter...until we realised that he has a thing for plastic wrap and boats.
Over the next eight years, we all strapped in for a wild ride with Dexter’s dark passenger as he lived out a code instilled by his adopted father Harry.
Here’s a quick recap of the first eight seasons of Dexter to refresh your memory as we get ready for Dexter: New Blood premiering on 8 November at 21:30 only on M-Net.
In the first season, we met Dexter and his sister Deb, who was also a police officer. They both worked at the same precinct.
Dexter’s code only allowed him to kill bad people. As a police officer, he had access to files from criminals who escaped justice.
He would take a drop of blood from their cheeks and keep them as trophies in a box that he hid in his apartment.
After he killed his victims he dumped them in pieces in the ocean: a clever plan that came back to haunt him at the end of season 1 when divers discovered the bodies.
Each season Dexter and the Miami PD tracked down a new serial killer that was terrorising the city, who became more and more exciting as the seasons passed.
Can you remember these killers?
- Ice Truck Killer
- The Skinner
- The Trinity Killer
- The Barrel Girl Gang
- The Doomsday Killer
- The Brain Surgeon
Dexter had us on the edge of our seats each season as we saw characters closing in on his secret. The first few seasons focused on a fellow police officer, James Doakes, who grows more and more suspicious of Dexter and finally discovers that he is the Bay Harbor Butcher. Dexter’s pyromaniac girlfriend also makes this discovery and decides to take care of the situation as a final act of love for him.
After trying his best to cover his tracks, it was his sister, Deb who put the final puzzle pieces together and caught him red-handed as he killed the Doomsday Killer. He managed to convince her that it is for the better and that he only kills bad people, and she accepts his dark passenger.
The final season ends with Dexter accepting a normal life after suffering the loss of his sister. He plans to move to Argentina with his girlfriend, Hannah McKay, who is also a serial killer, and his son Harrison but decides to drive his boat into a storm and fake his own death.
Eight years after the final season of this gripping show aired we are finally getting the closure we were looking for with this brand new limited series.
