March is a blast on DStv Premium! It’s no-napping TV as M-Net’s (DStv channel 101) March movies brings us the latest films from action daddies like Vin Diesel, Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. Dwayne fans can stick round for his autobiographical sitcom series, Young Rock, also on M-Net.

It’s pedal to the metal with new seasons of reality series like RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, The Amazing Race and actual racing car series Street Outlaws.

TV sleuths can enjoy the premiere season of the crime-busting British series Miss Scarlet and The Duke, and the return of the Canadian series, Coroner.

On a more serious note, March is Eco Month on BBC with a host of new documentaries from (and about) Sir David Attenborough (he is also presenting the continuing A Perfect Planet series throughout March) and wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan, who’s in South Africa to meet some cheetahs.

If you’re looking for something different, Korean drama and music reality channel tVN (DStv channel 134) launches on Monday, 1 March, joining Honey (a first of its kind pan-African lifestyle channel that launched in February) as one of 2021’s sweetest treats on DStv.

From Monday, 1 March, it’s total domination time from Love Island SA on M-Net (DStv channel 101), which is also home to the continuing fun of fellow local romantic reality series The Bachelorette South Africa.

And from The Globes to the Grammys to the Fiëstas, the 2020-2021 awards season is now in full swing on DStv.

This year’s 78th Golden Globe Awards will be hosted by comedy besties Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who’re hosting live from New York and LA. Watch on Monday, 1 March, on M-Net (DStv channel 101) at 03:00 and 22:30.

kykNET (DStv channel 144) will honour South Africa’s creative work during the trying 2020 art season at the 11th kykNET Fiëstas on Sunday, 7 March, on kykNET at 20:00. This year’s ceremony will be held as a televised event and nominees and artists like Corlea Botha, Lynelle Kenned, Devonecia Swartz and Elandré will be bringing viewers some stylish entertainment.

Watch music’s biggest awards event, the 2021 Grammy Awards, hosted by South African funnyman Trevor Noah, on Monday, 15 March, on 1Magic (DStv channel 103) at 20:30. Watch The Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards 2021 on Wednesday, 17 March, on Nickelodeon (DStv channel 305) at 16:50. The host is Saturday Night Live superstar and comedian Kenan Thompson, and viewers will be taken on a hi-tech journey from Bikini Bottom to outer space and celebrities’ homes.

It’s island time from now until Friday, 9 April, with an escape from the daily grind every weekday at 21:30 and a special Sunday treat after the 20:00 movie.

Soapie star and host of Slank and Kom Ons Jol, Leandie du Randt, is presenting the first-ever season of the reality dating show, Love Island South Africa. A group of sexy, single South Africans are converging on a swanky villa in Cape Town, prepared for a summer of romance, friendship and fun. Every few days, they’ll have to pair off with someone they fancy, and it’s hard luck when some people are on everyone’s “wanted” list, and some, not so much. If nobody wants you, so sorry, you’re off the “island”.

But even those who’re coupled up can’t just kick back in the pool together. There are new people arriving on the island, offering new temptations. And challenges will make people re-think their choices when it turns out it’s not enough just to be hot. Meanwhile, viewers will get their say, too. The season launched with a special 90-minute episode on Sunday, 28 February, at 20:00 which you can re-watch on Catch Up. Now, new one-hour episodes will air Monday-Friday at 21:30, with unseen footage from the week airing every Sunday after the 20:00 movie in Love Island SA S1: Unseen Bits.

Eco Season

As well as continuing with the A Perfect Planet documentary series, the BBC channels will continue to shine a spotlight on our planet’s ecology with a number of special programmes throughout March.

As well as hosting A Perfect Planet, Sir David Attenborough presents two documentaries on the topics of the current extinction crisis and climate change. The documentary, Attenborough’s Journey, will look at his remarkable lifetime of raising conservation awareness and appreciation of the natural world.

Also look out for repeats of on-topic documentaries 7.7 Billion People and Counting, Apocalypse Cow and The Last Igloo.

In this comedy series (created by Fresh Off The Boat’s Nahnatchka Khan and Dwayne Johnson) the year is 2032 and as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is running to be US president, he looks back over his childhood years growing up in Hawaii in a family of wrestling icons, his teen years as a 15-year-old with muscles and a moustache, and his sporting life as a football star at university. Adrian Groulx plays 10-year-old Dwayne, Bradley Constant plays him as a 15-year-old, and Uli Latukefu plays the 18-20-year-old version.

Jim Carrey’s melancholy kids show host character Jim Pickles is bringing some light and colour back into his world with new puppet characters and magical realism. But Mister Pickles’ Puppet Time show’s fate is in the balance after he lost sponsors thanks to S1’s on-air Christmas speech about death. There’s also the small matter of him running over his ex-wife’s new boyfriend. And this season, the release of his new talking-and-listening Mister Pickles doll will make parents fear for their children’s safety.

The season starts in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic with Jenny and her colleagues at the coroner’s office, including new pathologist Melanie (Uni Park), thoroughly overwhelmed by the flood of bodies – not all of whom were victims of the virus. In her personal life, Jenny, who’s now single again, will embrace some unusual therapies as she gets to grips with her past trauma. And Detective Donovan will have to come to terms with his own looming health crisis.

This fun period drama follows Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) as she takes over her late father’s detective agency, refusing to marry to escape her now dire financial situation. But since she’s living in Victorian England, she isn’t allowed to own and operate a business without a male business partner – enter her reluctant childhood best friend, William “The Duke” Wellington (Stuart Martin), who’s also her father’s former protégé. Now, how long will it take these detectives to spot William’s crush on Eliza?

And the team will take on the case of a former child actor, which has another set of investigators involved – the crew of a true-crime documentary series.

Coming up, Ressler tells Liz about her mother, Red reunites with an old flame at a deadly dinner party, Ressler’s estranged brother, Robby, returns and in a flashback to Ressler’s past in 1995, we see how Robby covered up a murder that Ressler committed. And Red prepares to hand his criminal empire to Liz, while she weighs up whether to be loyal to Mom or Dad.

This crime drama, which lists Jerry Bruckheimer among its producers, spotlights the opioid epidemic in the US. Alcoholic and drug-addicted National Marine Fisheries Service Agent Jackie Quiñones (Monica Raymund) is determined to find the killers of a fellow addict – a key informant for drug cop Ray Abruzzo (James Badge Dale) – whose body she finds washed up on the beach. As Jackie investigates the case, she’ll start seeing her friends and neighbours in a new light as many people in town are involved in the drug trade.

Action movie aces

There’s no such thing as a sleepy Sunday this March as M-Net’s action daddies take over the scene. Expect muscle-pumping thrills from Vin Diesel, Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. Megan Fox leads a special Saturday action movie titled Rogue, which was filmed here in South Africa. And this month’s TNT original title, Vicious Fun, sees a horror movie critic stuck in a self-help group with serial killers.

For the kids

There’s something special for boys and girls of all ages this March. Coop & Cami and the Spyders are back with online madness for the tweens. Spider-Man unites with The Avengers and Guardians of The Galaxy for an amazing crossover season. And new series Elliott From Earth whisks kids into space for intergalactic adventures. Plus, the Siyaya kids are back with some educational wildlife fun.
