Local murder mystery based on Sally Andrew's 2015 novel of the same name. Kindly Scottish transplant Tannie Maria (Maria Doyle Kennedy) shares advice and recipes in a small-town Karoo newspaper. But when her new friend with an abusive husband turns up dead, Maria and risk-taking rookie reporter Jessie September (Kylie Fisher) decide to investigate. The book itself sparked a cooking craze, and now viewers can fall in love with Tannie Maria, the Karoo and those seductive kitchen moments.

Maria Purvis has taken to the “Tannie” title like a duck to water. She seems scatter-brained, but make no mistake, those darting eyes are taking in everything. She’s a kind, empathetic, cheerful, polite people pleaser on the surface, but if you want to know what’s really going on with her, try her cooking. Maria longs for passion and companionship, but there’s a dead, abusive husband in her past, and she’s dodging phonecalls from a Scottish policeman. Her pet chicken’s name is Morag.

He’s 1 of the rare people with the wit to appreciate just how much more complicated Tannie Maria is than she seems on the surface. He kind of fancies her, too.

And determined women who know what they want will find a friend in Hattie.

Piet’s family were migrant labourers and he studied criminology on a church scholarship, and he’s proud of his Khoisan roots. He stands out in the town like a peacock in a pantry.

While he fancies Jessie, he doesn’t have her depth and he’s not the sort to reflect much on social issues or challenge the culture and traditions he comes from.
