Funky Freddy Lalendle’s unique raspy voice turned all four the red chairs during the Blind Auditions. During their emotional pleas to snatch the 23-year old from Durban for their teams, the coaches showered Freddy with compliments. Karen even said: “You have so much mojo. South Africa needs something new… and that is you.” Freddy’s music style has been inspired by the Afrocentric music his late dad used to listen to, while the sincerity in his voice can be attributed to the values instilled by his grandmother, who raised him until Grade 4. These days Freddy lives with his wife Celene in Overport in Durban, where apart from singing, he also runs his band, The Subway Run. When he made his choice, he made last season’s winning coach Kahn a very happy man.
