DStv sits down with renowned Kenyan cartoonist Paul Kelemba aka MADDO, a finalist in the 2015 CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards
Best known for his craft in caricature and only by the name Maddo, Paul Kelemba is undoubtedly Kenya’s top cartoonist and a veteran in the field. After 26 years in the field and contributing for in the Standard Newspaper’s weekly "It’s a Madd, Madd World", he has recived a nomination in the highly esteemed 2015 CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards.
He makes history as the first cartoonist to be put in such a category with feature writers, camera men and reporters. His weekly feature is usually a full-page, full-colour, composite cartoon feature that comments on political and social life with humorous but informative anecdotes.
It has endeared itself with a sizeable readership while attracting the wrath of politicians. He says, “Politicians are our fodder, we fry them. But not to be ridiculous, there must be a socio-political comment we are making. We also don’t do cartoons on minorities or attach religion.”
Maddo is among five Kenyan finalists in the awards that will take place in Nairobi this October. He is also among 31 nominees selected from 39 countries across the continent.
“Bring it on,” he says of the tough pool as the only cartoonist.
