This gathering of greats will feature at 5pm CAT daily on SuperSport Variety 3 and will include a blend of documentary-style content and key matches and events that demonstrate why these athletes have carved their names in sporting lore.

Monday 17 July brings a closer look at one of the greatest football players of all time, Diego Armando Maradona, who thrilled at both club and international level – to the extent that he is virtually a deity in Argentina, and Italian side Napoli renamed their stadium in his honour.

“If I could apologise and go back and change history I would do. But the goal is still a goal, Argentina became world champions and I was the best player in the world,” said Maradona in the wake of his famous ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in the 1986 World Cup.

Tuesday 18 July keeps up the football theme by looking at the greatest moments of Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League (spoiler alert: there are plenty... Los Blancos have won the world’s top club competition a record 14 times!), while Wednesday 19 July is focused on the greatest Rugby World Cup teams of two of the sport’s top nations, South Africa (the Springboks) and New Zealand (the All Blacks).

Thursday 20 July sees a switch of focus to Lewis Hamilton, who holds the record for the most Formula 1 race victories (103) in history and is – alongside only the great Michael Schumacher – a seven time World Champion.

Friday 21 July is all about one of the most beloved athletes in recent times, tennis star Roger Federer. ‘The Swiss Master’ was perhaps the most aesthetically-pleasing player to ever take to a court, but he had as much substance as style – as evidenced by an incredible haul of 20 grand slam singles titles.

“Once you find that peace, that place of peace and quiet, harmony and confidence, that’s when you start playing your best,” said Federer about the serenity he displayed when at the absolute peak of his powers.

Saturday 22 July focuses on a great rivalry in MotoGP that saw a passing of the torch from Valentino Rossi to Marc Marquez, while Sunday 23 July is all about some of the greats of Springbok Rugby.
