Both sides are realistically chasing the ‘best of the rest’ tag behind leaders and title favourites Real Madrid, but that does not diminish the importance of this clash – especially for Los Rojiblancos manager Diego Simeone.

“When you face a rival like that, you have that mindset that if you lose an inch, the battle is lost,” said the Argentina tactician. “They make it so that when you face them, your concentration needs to be at 100 percent and when we succeed, we know we can compete. And they know that we know we can do it. It strengthens us.”

Barca’s Xavi, meanwhile, has expressed his respect for the time and perseverance of his Atletico counterpart: “Simeone's teams are always difficult to attack against. Each day I have more respect and admiration for ‘Cholo’. For all that he has done. So many years at a big club... he has changed the history of the club and that has a lot of merit.”

The weekend’s action opens with Real Sociedad hosting Cadiz on Friday night, while Saturday will be headlined by Real Madrid visiting Osasuna, and a Basque derby between Athletic Bilbao and Deportivo Alaves.

Real manager Carlo Ancelotti has urged his team not to underestimate the challenges which lie ahead of them and continue to push hard for the championship: “We need the points to make the most of the advantage we've got [...]. We have built up a lead and we want to make it count. LaLiga is in our hands, we can't slip up so every game is important,” said the Italian.

Sunday, aside from the Atletico v Barca march, also features Sevilla chasing three points at home to Celta Vigo, Real Betis visiting Rayo Vallecano and a potential thriller between Villarreal and Valencia at Estadio de la Ceramica.
