Couples we admire – Ultimate Love

19 February 2020
Since this week is all about coupling up, here are a few of the many local and international duos we love.

It’s easy to scoff when celebrities get together, or even get married. Afterall, the almost inevitable breakup makes just as many headlines.

Some though have prevailed through their challenges to have long-lasting relationships which seems to endure.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith

Wedding date: December 31, 1997.

Number of years married:  23 years.

Secret to their staying power:

They've been relatively private about their relationship and it seems to have worked in their favour.

Will made it clear in 2006 that divorce isn't an option when he chatted to MTV News in 2006. "With Jada, I stood up in front of God and said, 'til death do us part,'" Smith said. "So there are two possible outcomes. One, we are going to be together till death, or two, I am dead."

Years after meeting her when she auditioned for the role of Will's girlfriend in the 90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Will admitted in 2018 on Red Table Talk that he was attracted to her. "I knew there was something in our energy that would be magic," he said.

In the same year, Will said in a TIDAL's Rap Radar podcast: "We don't even say we're married anymore," Smith explained on the music streaming service. "We refer to ourselves as 'life partners,' where you get into that space where you realise you are literally with somebody for the rest of your life. There's no deal breakers. There's nothing she could do—ever—nothing that would break our relationship. She has my support 'til death, and it feels so good to get to that space."

We wonder if any of our couples will be saying these sort of things about their partners, whom they met on Ultimate Love?

Banky W and Adesua

Wedding date: A traditional ceremony on November 19, and a white wedding on November 25, 2017.

Number of years married: Three years.

Secret to their staying power:

While still newly married, the two have been open and honest with each other while having a deep-rooted faith.

Banky W told Pulse news website: “So for me, my advice to anybody considering spending the rest of their lives with is that it’s a threefold cord – it’s you, your partner, and God. If you put God in the situation, then you stand a chance of lasting the test of time.

“If you think that you are too smart or too intelligent or whatever or you just somehow relegate God to the background and you don’t involve him in the relationship, then you are setting yourself up for a difficult time.”

In the same interview, he added: “We try to pray together, read the bible together every day or as many days as possible. Uhm, before getting married, I strongly recommend to couples to go through counselling.

“It shocks me how many young people make the singular most important decision of your life as to whom you are going to spend the rest of your life with but you do not seek God’s opinion or blessing or help in the matter and I think that in the world that we live today if you are trying to do something like a relationship or marriage and you are not actively including God in it on a day to day basis, praying together, reading the bible together or whatever faith you follow, if you are not going for counselling to learn the issues that young couples tend to face, and learning how to deal with that, then you are setting up yourself for failure or for a very very rough time.

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Shawn Carter (aka Jay-Z)

Wedding date: April 4, 2008.

Number of years married: 12 years.

Secret to their staying power:

With over a decade of being together, does this mean a couple who sings together, stays together?

Despite their numerous collaborations, they still have experienced ups and downs, with allegations that he cheated on her. And it is those allegations that apparently gave birth to her iconic Lemonade album, and his 4:44 album.

In an interview with T Magazine, Jay Z said of their difficult patches: “You know, most people walk away, and like divorce rate is like 50% or something ’cause most people can’t see themselves. The hardest thing is seeing pain on someone’s face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself,” he said. “So, you know, most people don’t want to do that. You don’t want to look inside yourself. And so you walk away.”

Revealing lyrics were released on their joint album, Everything is Love, such as: “You did some things to me / Boy you do some things to me / But love is deeper than your pain and I believe you can change" on the finale song 'Love Happy'.

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and Cynthia Obianodo

Wedding date: February 6, 2016.

Number of years married: Four years.

Secret to their staying power:

They openly share affection for each other on their social platforms, which could be one of the components that add to their success. It is enough to make anyone swoon!

On his fourth wedding anniversary, he described it as the best years of his life while Cynthia  shared lyrics of an aptly named song, 'Four Years' by Styl Plus: "Four years don waka. We still dey carry go. Nobody waka, nobody go solo. Baba God o our case e oo, na your grace o…Happy anniversary boo. Love you loads."

He told the Legit news and entertainment website: “I would say I was probably lucky using the word because I was dating someone who wasn’t in the entertainment industry at all. So it was easy for me to be with her, and have moments with her that nobody really knew about. We dated for quite a while and people thought we date for four months which I thought was funny."

We think there are a few young couples in the Love Pad who emulate Ebuka and Cynthia.

Barack and Michelle Obama

Wedding date: October 3, 1992.

Number of years married: 28 years.

Secret to their staying power:

They've both tried to maintain relative normalcy even from their days in the White House and President and First Lady. Sinve then, their daughters have grown on and moved out of home.

At the Oprah's 2020 Vision Your Life in Focus Tour, Michelle Obama opened up to Oprah Winfrey: “It’s just me and him and [the family dogs] Bo and Sunny and dinner. And they don’t talk, the dogs,” Michelle said. She said they are “coming back to this point where we see each other again,” and added, “Now I can look at him and recognise my husband, he’s still the man I fell in love with.”

They still share affectionate messages, like Ebuka and Cynthia on their social media platforms.
