Iretiola Doyle is no stranger to our TV screens. Popular for her role in highly acclaimed TV soapTinsel, she has scored an AfricaMagic Viewers' Choice Awards nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category for her work in the TV series Gidi Up.
We had a chance to chat with her.
DStv: How did you hear about your AMVCA nomination?
Iretiola: It had been a very long Tinsel day from 7:00 to 19:00. I had given my word that I would show up for the event but it was a very tiring and hectic day. As I parked my car at home, my daughter just ran out to meet me, shouting, “Mummy, mummy, you have been nominated.”
How did you feel?
I was shocked beyond my imagination. It was not expected at all. I was wondering what production I was nominated for.
How do you feel about the other nominees in your category?
Enough respect! Nomination is a major deal. AMVCA recognises the best of the best. I salute and respect them.
In your category, everyone else acted in a movie apart from you. Is this an advantage or disadvantage?
I have no way of knowing either way. In the grand scheme, it is not important.
Tell us about your cougar character Illa in Gidi Up.
I won’t narrow it down. She is much more than a cougar though that is the strongest character trait people noticed. It was a meaty role. I enjoyed playing her because she is a very strong female: independent, unforgettable and sexy.
How do you deal with attention from male fans?
I have had 20 years of practice. You learn how to be friendly without being familiar.
Who are your favourite acts and movies in this year’s AMVCA?
Besides Gidi Up? I admire AY’s success. I think he has done a great job and he deserves to be rewarded. If there is any other work of art or person beside myself and other Tinsel family mates, it would be AY.
