Few individuals are as ground shaking in the world of the arts as Tsitsi Dangarembga! The critically acclaimed author, director and playwright has steadily seen her career ascend to dizzying heights as one of Zimbabwe's most renowned creatives.

Her works have never failed to inspire while creating urgent dialogue about pertinent issues and this knack for writing unashamedly honest stories has earned her worldwide reverence. Here are a few facts you may not know about the author

  • Tsitsi was the pen behind Neria. She wrote the short story for the iconic Zimbabwean film in 1993 and it went on to be so successful on the big screen that it became the highest grossing film in the country's history!

  • Her first novel, 'Nervous Condition', was published in 1988 when Tsitsi was just 28 years of age.

  • Tsitsi was once a student of medicine at the University of Cambridge however she later opted to study psychology at the University of Zimbabwe.

  • Her 1996 film 'Everyone's Child' was the first feature film directed by a black Zimbabwean woman.

  • Before her foray into the world of the arts she actually worked at an advertising agency as a copywriter.
