Built for success, Boer Soek ’n Vrou was an immediate hit amongst kykNET viewers. The show has become a pillar in Afrikaans entertainment but because everybody loves love, it has also gained a loyal English following. We wanted to make sure that you don’t get too lost in translation, so we’ve put together a little guide to help you have the best time as you join in on all of the Season 12 fun.

So what’s the big deal?

You’re probably wondering how we’ve managed to convince hundreds of hopeful singles to take a chance on love, year-after-year. Well, the answer is simple – results. Since season one, we have seen 16 couples walk down the aisle, thanks to the show. With such impressive stats, anybody looking for love could take on the Boer Soek ’n Vrou challenge with the confidence that Mr. (or Mrs.) Right is probably around the corner.

All in the details…

Before every season starts, thousands of single South African farmers send in their entries. Ten of the best entries are then chosen to participate in the series. Once the ten farmers have been announced, singles all over the country have the opportunity to attempt at making their first impression to a farmer of their choice by means of a written letter. The letter has become one of the key features of any season as it is the first opportunity for the prospectives to form a connection. Some singles have put in the work to make sure that their letters stand out. We’ve seen it all- poems, teddy bears and even home-baked goodies.

While all of the farmers have the opportunity to pursue potential love from the letters that they have received; only 5 farmers who have received the most letters, have the opportunity to explore love in front of the camera.

The five farmers have the opportunity to test their initial chemistry with 10 potential partners (known as pasmaats) through lightning-round first meetings. In the end, the farmers have to choose very wisely because only three pasmaats follow him to the farm to attempt to win his heart once and for all.

Once we are back on the farms, we can see how the farmer and pasmaats get to know each other through alone-time, fun couples’ activities and (maybe, most importantly) sharing delicious traditional South African food. The pasmaats can also look forward to meeting the farmers closest friends and family.

After some serious soul searching, the farmer has to choose the pasmaat that he thinks might just be The One. This is definitely not your typical love story!
