02 March 2020
This week the Love Guests get into the Edo culture.
Week 4 brief_article

"I am moving you to another part of Nigeria," read Aunty's note to the Love Guests, which Kachi read out loud. "This week you will celebrate the richness of the Edo culture. Edo state is made up of four major ethnic groups: Bini, Esan, Owan, and Etsako. It is also known for royalty and its elaborate attire."

The Love Guests will re-enact the coronation of the Oba of Benin, who is the traditional ruler and custodian of the culture of the Edo people.

Their re-enactments will take place over three days:

Tuesday: a bead expert will visit the Love Pad to teach them how to create coral bead accessories to be used on the day of the coronation.

Thursday: they will perform a dance drama that depicts the 10-day journey and traditional rites the Oba embarks on before the main event. Love Guests must choose their Oba. The drama will feature warriors, chiefs, noblemen and ordinary citizens who are a part of the Oba’s journey to ascension.

Saturday: they will organise an elaborate coronation for the Oba of Benin which will include traditional Benin dance performances.
