Somizi Mhlongo-Motaung

If you were to look up the word ‘talent’ in the dictionary, you could surely find this man’s name there! Somizi owes his talent to his legendary, late parents Ndaba Mhlongo (a comedian) and Mary Twala (an actress) – this is no doubt where he gets his comedic side, as well as his flair for dramatics.

While some people may know him as Somgaga, the choreographer, TV personality and Idols judge, his presence in the entertainment industry exceeds the age of Idols the show itself! He starred in a drama series, Molo Fish, along with his mother Mary Twala way back the early ‘90s, and also played a very convincing character called Fire – who had every reason to be fired up – in the musical drama, Sarafina! in 1992.

As if choreographing the 2010 World Cup opening and closing ceremony wasn’t enough, over the years Somizi has not stopped being splendiforous; he has given us music, much-loved and watched reality shows, fitness and cooking content, and plenty of laughs on Idols SA. He’s a dynamic artist which makes him a dynamite judge, able to critique movement during a performance, styling and voice.

When it comes to Somizi, “triple threat” does not even begin to quantify what this man is capable of doing. If he can dream it, he will do it and “wooshem” whoever tries to stop him.
