Kovu is a Mombasa-based Swahili drama that revolves around the Hazes who are super rich and appear to be happy. However, as the storyline develops, deception and deep secrets that threaten the unity of the Haze family, are revealed.
The story starts when Jaffer (played by Ken Ambani) relocates to Kenya from Tanzania with his wife Alisa (Saada Fateh) and their three children. As they adjust to their new life in Kenya, Alisa is tormented by a dark secret that causes her to develop a deep hatred for her firstborn daughter Rina and a rift between her and her husband develops.
Here’s some more information about each character:
Ken Ambani – Jaffer Haze
Jaffar is a rich family man who struggles to bring sanity to his family. He moved his family from Tanzania to Kenya to do business. Jaffer appreciates his parents but is not proud of them, especially his father.
Saada Fateh – Alisa
Alisa is the wife to Jaffar and the mother to Rina, Ruby and Roy. She is an emotional wreck who tries to put on a brave face for the sake of her family, and portrays a classy, no-nonsense lady. She has a closely guarded secret that can ruin her marriage and lavish lifestyle.
Patrick Owino – Carlos Santana
Carlos is a sly and cunning character who runs a drug empire to fuel his political and philanthropic ambitions. He is very well connected with the security agencies and ensures that he rules supreme. He hides a dark secret about his sister Lorna and is ready to go to all lengths to ensure that it never comes to light. His social life is a secret, and he still nurses a broken heart after losing his first ever crush, Alisa.
Mwanatumu Bwanakali – Lorna
Lorna is a woman living in an infused lunacy. This has been happening ever since her youth after witnessing her brother Carlos raping her best friend in their own home. Carlos decided to ground her by giving her insanity drugs so she constantly loses her memory and thus cannot tell the authorities. Although she lives in her brother’s house, she still lives with the pain of the sad incident.
Musa Kugotwah – Roy
Musa plays Roy, a young ambitious man who has a zeal for success. He is driven by power, greed and fame, while secretly fighting drug addiction.
Illya Frank – Tasha
Tasha is a typical modern, vibrant, beautiful, young lady who is manipulative and will go to the extremes to get what she wants, regardless of who is involved or whether its legal or illegal. She uses her charm and body to seduce men to get what she wants.
Teresa Shikolio – Rosa
Teresa plays Rosa, a strict house manager for a very prominent businessman, but that's not the reason she is there. She and her boss know each other very well and at some point, she even was his personal confidant. She is also a spy for her boss’s rival, Carlos.
Fosi Khamis – Ruby
Ruby is a spoilt, fun-loving, ambitious, witty and well-educated woman who has a knack of getting involved with dangerous men. She is often a captive of hopeless love.
Shallet Akinyi – Rina
Rina is a beautiful and very intelligent woman but is also very broken inside. She is hopeless and helpless and struggles with many unanswered questions. She is often on the receiving end of her mother’s wrath.
