Every year on March 8, women around the world celebrate International Women’s Day. This year’s theme was #BreaktheBias which aims to spotlight the deliberate or unconscious biases against women, which fuel gender inequality.
Here are five quotes by African women who have made an impact in the continent and continue to set the bar higher for women all over the world:
“Patriarchy doesn’t sleep. Women are judged harshly and given the narrowest margin of error” – Monica Geingos, Namibia’s First Lady
“When I witness the resilience of women all over the world, rising above the most difficult situations, I am reminded that I can never give up” –
Zawadi Nyong’o, digital media strategist and feminist.
“African women, in general, need to know that it’s OK for them to be the way they are – to see the way they are as a strength and to be liberated from fear and from silence” – Wangari Maathai, environmentalist and political activist.
“If your dreams don’t scare you, they are not big enough” – Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberia President.
“The seeds of success in every nation on earth are best planted in women and children” – Joyce Banda, Malawi former president.
The multi-talented artist Nana Tandala (Sanaipei Tande) from the much-loved telenovela Kina shared a snippet of her song Nabo on International Women’s Day. Her song encourages women around the world to continue forging forward despite the challenges and hurdles they face.
