“Life is not something that you plan but something that is destined for you”. These are the words of music icon and beloved humanitarian Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Pregnant at seventeen and with her chances of going to unversity halted, destiny changed the course of her life. A chance meeting with music producer Phil Hollis at nineteen took her life in a different direction. Music became the platform to articulate what was happening in the country. At just nineteen year-old Yvonne Chaka Chaka became a a household name. The disco diva got the country on their feet with her song ‘I’m in love with a DJ’. She was destined for success and there was no turning back!
It was her late father who instilled a love of music. She has multiple awards to her name, more than twenty successful albums and more! The mother of four, ‘daughter’ to Madiba and Princess of Africa to the rest of the world, Yvonne lives her belief that “people make you who you are”. She believe in giving back and uses her celebrity to speak to the voiceless and influence the lives of others- wanting nothing in return.
A tragic loss close to home propelled her into making a difference. She belives that “when people are healthy, they are able to do well for themselves.” She established the Princess of Africa Foundation to educate and positively impact vulnerable women and girls and give them a better chance at life. Her efforts were recognised by the UN and she became a global ambassador. She knows people have made her who she is; and without question, goes out to give back in the lives of others.
