As much as we sorely miss Christopher Nolan’s take on the Dark Knight, DC has not left us wanting. With Man of Steel they launched the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) that ensured we would not only get to see Superman and eventually a new Batman, but a host of other fan favourites as well.

This week’s Sunday night movie is the third instalment in the DC Extended Universe: Suicide Squad. But before we join the “worst heroes ever”, let’s take a quick look at past, present and future titles that make up this exciting movie universe.

Man of Steel

It all started in 2013 with the reboot of the Superman franchise. Henry Cavill was cast in the titular role, with 300 director Zack Snyder taking the helm. An origin story, the film takes us to Krypton and Earth, introducing us to the superheroes biological and adoptive parents.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Henry Cavill returned as Superman in this long-anticipated face-off with DC’s Dark Knight. With Christian Bale hanging up his cloak, it was Ben Affleck’s turn to take on the role of Batman. Zack Snyder returned as director, with Jeremy Irons taking over the role of Alfred Pennyworth from Michael Caine.

Suicide Squad

Superman is the boy-next-door from another planet, Batman is the self-funded, brooding vigilante – but the Suicide Squad? They’re the villains turned anti-heroes appointed by the government to fight evil. This zany premise, and a colourful cast of characters that includes Deadshot, Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang, makes for an explosive good time as they face down evil, and take on a bit of the Joker on the side.

Wonder Woman

She first made her appearance in Batman v Superman, but this movie places Gal Gadot’s title character front and centre of the action. With a wonderful lead, a fantastic entourage and a good dose of humour, the movie dominated at the box office becoming the highest grossing superhero origin movie to date.

Justice League

We can look forward to the next instalment of the DC Extended Universe this November. Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot are all set to reprise their roles, with Jason Momoa set to appear as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as the Flash and Ray Fisher as Cyborg.

Aquaman

Also known as Arthur Curry, Aquaman is getting a standalone film. Due for release next year December, it will see Jason Momoa return to the role. He first appeared as the character in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-him cameo in Batman v Superman, but if you’re a Game of Thrones fan you’ll definitely remember him as Khal Drogo in Season 1.

There’s lots more coming your way from the DC Extended Universe with movies planned all the way up to 2020. But for now, let’s stay in the present and enjoy a different kind of hero in Suicide Squad this Sunday on M-Net.
