Gary Player

Ask golfing champion Gary Player what made him the only international player to have won golf’s most coveted titles and he will tell you he believed he could win and he did! Player is the only international golfer to have won The Masters, U.S. Open, Open Championship and the PGA Championship- in one calendar year. Grand slam champion! His feats don’t end there. He is also the only player to have won the Grand Slam on the Regular Tour and on the Senior Tour! Play on Player!

“There’s nothing you can’t do, if you’ve got perseverance, faith and above all, hard work.” His brother’s words to him at age 14 led him on a path of self-belief that saw him etch his name in golf’s hall of fame books.

The Black Knight; as he was known on the greens, had a career spanning 50 years! His dedication to fitness in mind and body is what helped him earn 167 career wins. Often playing away from his country and family, Player overcame the odds. His infectious personality endeared him in the hearts of people, both locally and abroad. And in 2016, we will see him again on the sports stage when he captains the SA golf team at the Rio Olympics.

Player is arguably the greatest sportsman South Africa has produced! In the eyes of his family, friends and fans, his legacy will be that of a man who loved people, was helpful and showed kindness wherever possible. For the legend himself, he would like to be remembered as more than just a golfer. With his humanitarian work, he wants to be remembered as a man who saved, changed and made a difference in the lives of people.
