My Story, M-Net’s popular documentary series is back on Monday, 2 November with the inspirational story of South African super-chef Reuben Riffel.
Most people will know him as a culinary brand ambassador or as the owner of a number of his own restaurants, but Reuben Riffel started out from humble beginnings. Growing up in the township bordering the affluent town of Franschhoek in the Western Cape, how did a young man without any formal training end up becoming the toast of South Africa’s culinary world?
From starting out as a waiter when a construction job that he had failed to stimulate him, to making a brave move to the UK with his wife Maryke, viewers will be welcomed into the Riffel home to discover how Reuben overcame numerous unforeseen obstacles and made a successful name for himself in an industry that is notoriously gruelling and unpredictable.
From opening the first Reuben’s restaurant, turning down the original offer to be a judge on MasterChef South Africa, and winning numerous accolades along the way, Reuben and his family as well as those nearest to him piece together the remarkable tale of how the boy from Groendal came full circle to living back in Franschhoek today.
Reuben’s story will air on M-Net Channel 101 at 19:30 on Monday, 2 November.
