Calling all muggles, here's your guide to the world of wizardry.
fantastic beasts

Muggles gather round. Your Sunday night movie this weekend is Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. To help you navigate the world of witches and wizards, you need to be skilled in their magical vocab. Here’s a quick guide to cool terms from the wonderful world of magic. Get comfortable and listen carefully.

Firstly, what is a muggle?

A muggle is a human without any magical powers. They have no magic in their blood and are not descendants of wizards, witches, or anyone from the world of magic. The American term for muggle is no-maj, simply meaning no magic.

Animagus

An animagus is a witch or wizard who can transform into an animal. Professor Minerva McGonagall of Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry possesses this power and can transform into a cat. She was taught by Dumbledore himself how to master this fine art by age 17.

Fancy a game of quidditch?

This is an extreme sport played on flying broomsticks, often featured in the Harry Potter books and movies. Well muggles, brace yourselves and grab them broomsticks ‘cause there’s going to be a form of quidditch played in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.

Butterbeer and gigglewater

Butterbeer is a drink made out of butterscotch that young witches and wizards enjoy, especially during a visit to Diagon Alley or after a quidditch win. In Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them the characters visit The Blind Pig and drink gigglewater. As you guessed it, this one makes you giggle.

Beware the billywig

No, this is not some sort of fancy, magical wig that you muggles can wear to gain power. Billywigs are blue bugs that have wings attached to their heads and are nasty stingers! You best hope you don’t encounter these nasty buggers.

Legilimens

A person who can read another person’s thoughts. Queenie from the Fantastic Beasts franchise has this cool power. Ah, one can only dream of possessing such an amazing power, as the possibilities would be endless.

Magizoologist

A person who studies magical creatures. Also, magical creatures are called fantastic beasts. Wink, wink.

So there you have it: some magical terms to get you started. Catch all the magic, muggles, witches, wizards, and wonder in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Airing on Sunday 12 March at 20:05 on M-Net 101.
