PGA Championship preview, 16-19 May 2024

The second golf major of the year is the PGA Championship, which will be held at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 May 2024.

Valhalla will be hosting the PGA Championship for the fourth time (following 1996, 2000 and 2014), with the course a 7394-yard par 70.

Brooks Koepka is the defending PGA Championship title holder, having won the tournament for a third time in 2023 when he shot 271 (- 9) to defeat Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler by two strokes at Oak Hill in Rochester, New York.

Koepka only managed a 45th place (tied) finish at The Masters last month, a result he called an “embarrassment”. The American has, however, been finding form of late on the LIV Golf tour.

“Just kind of finding my own little swagger,” said Koepka after a strong showing in Singapore. “I think Augusta was a good wake-up call. I’ve had to really grind since then.

“That really kicked things into overdrive for me. I really have had to put my nose down and grind a little bit harder. I even had to look my team in the eye and apologise. I’m not looking to do that again.”

Scheffler, who won The Masters for a second time last month, will be looking for a strong showing at the PGA Championship, though he acknowledges that becoming a father may see him change his priorities.

“I will definitely enjoy the birth of my first child. But with that being said, I still love competing. My priorities will change here very soon. My son or daughter will now be the main priority, along with my wife, so golf will now be probably fourth in line,” he noted. “But I still love competing. I don't plan on taking my eye off the ball any time soon, that's for sure.”

Koepka and Scheffler will headline one of the strongest fields in golf, as the likes of Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Phil Mickelson, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm and Patrick Cantlay also tee up in search of golf major glory.
