Just a few episodes in, Ajoche presented itself as story built on a countless number of interconnected layers, channeling the pain inflicting acts of revenge, the dangers of half-calculated moves and the blunt symphonies of bittersweet innocence.
While all of Ocholuje’s sister villages and neighboring kingdoms shunned Aboh’s alleged involvement in the crushing of Odaleko’s ‘heir hopes’, their indifference was a clear indication of disapproval, a reason to remain armed and shielded from Ocholuje’s wrath. We were however handed a brightly lit candlestick that allowed us to see through the deceit that hovered within the borders of the Kingdom, the real enemy of the throne.
The apple that did not match the tree’s tidings and was a fruit of an isolated destiny dictated and purposefully aligned by the great Alekwu; General Apeh threw dust at the spirits’ will and orchestrated his own destiny by having Odaleko’s wife slaughtered and pinning it on an entire bloodline.
Mysteriously bound by the dark cloud of smoke borne from Aboh’s total demise, Oofuni fed her hatred and sharped the only lethal weapon she knew how to use ever so well, earth’s herbs. Thought she wasn’t the only hunter co-existing with those who’d eventually become her game, she was the slimiest and seeing as her initial intentions were purely those of an apprentice, Oofuni’s character leaves the viewer in a melancholic state, yearning to aid in her revenge run.
Both fully bound by Aboh’s tragedy, Apeh and Oofuni are titans at heart and will stop at nothing to reap what they never saw growing. With the help of Ijewode and her faithful assistant, the general saw to it that the poisoned calabash ended a life and stained Oofuni to the point of confessing all past atrocities… but is this enough to put the phoenix to sleep? Oh how we envy the time keeper for knowing it all.
