In Oto Egba, marrying Omoefe — the Ovie’s son and heir to the throne — would be any maiden’s dream. But for Onajite, granddaughter of the Okakuro, it has been anything but blissful. While Omoefe is calm and composed in public, behind closed doors, their marriage is cold and distant. Since their wedding, he has refused all intimacy, leaving Onajite both hurt and confused.
Standing her ground
Yearning for her husband’s affection, Onajite found herself under additional pressure from Queen Odiri, Omoefe’s mother. Desperate for a grandchild — and a male heir — the Queen forced Onajite to drink various herbal concoctions, believing they would speed up her chances of conceiving.
This infuriated Onajite, as she knew the real issue wasn’t her fertility but Omoefe’s refusal to share a marital bed. Confronting her husband, she demanded that he fulfil his duties as a husband. Instead, Omoefe resisted, their argument escalating until he attempted to walk away — but Onajite had other plans.
A public outburst
Following him outside, Onajite caused a scene that drew the attention of everyone in the Ovie’s quarters — including her grandfather, the Okakuro, and the Ovie himself. In front of the royal court, she lashed out at Omoefe for neglecting his marital responsibilities.
Clinging to him in defiance, she demanded he prove himself as her husband. When the King attempted to mediate, Onajite stunned the crowd by declaring she would rather die than remain trapped in a loveless marriage.
It took Ogheneovo’s intervention to calm her down, while her grandfather — the King’s right-hand man — apologised on her behalf. The incident may have been diffused, but the heart of the matter remains unresolved. Why is Omoefe abstaining from his wife? What secrets lie beneath his composed exterior?
