Life has already been punching Tomisin in the gut, from the downfall of his tech startup to watching his dad battle a terminal illness. Just when we thought things couldn’t get worse, we find out Mummy Dearest came with a plot twist so messy it deserves its own telenovela.
Yes, folks. Tomisin’s mum has a gambling addiction, and not the “occasional lotto ticket” type. We’re talking full-blown, lie-to-your-son-and-steal-his-money kind of gambling. Let’s get into it.
Mama scammer in a buba
Tomisin’s mum has turned manipulation into a fine art. She’s lied repeatedly to her son, claiming she needed money for his dad’s hospital bills. But where did the cash go? Not to the doctors, that’s for sure. In fact, there was a time Tomisin had to beg the doctor about settling a bill, only for the doctor to look genuinely confused, like: “Which money, sir?” And just like a scene from a Nollywood movie, there goes mummy, tiptoeing out of the hospital lobby, dodging eye contact like a student who didn’t do their assignment.
The girlfriend shake-down
Now, Tomisin clearly saw the signs, which is probably why he tried so hard to keep his rich girlfriend, Chisom, away from his mum. But alas, love makes you hopeful... and mums can smell money like a bloodhound. It didn’t take long after the first “nice to meet you” before Tomisin’s mum hit Chisom with the “Please, I need money for surgery” line. We wish we were joking. And just when you think it couldn’t be more awkward, she sent a voice note to Chisom saying, “Thank you.” Ma’am… at least try to be subtle.
Watch her get caught
Guilt-trips and crocodile tears
Every time she gets caught, Tomisin’s mum pulls out her greatest weapon: the African mother guilt-trip combo. It’s a tragic melody of “I carried you for nine months”, “I didn’t have help raising you”, and “Don’t I deserve some comfort too?” Tomisin has heard it all. And honestly, we don’t blame him for trying to set boundaries (even though they’re constantly crossed).
Now that dad is gone… What happens next?
Just when you think she might calm down, life delivers another blow: Tomisin’s dad passes away. Now the big question is, will this be her wake-up call, or will she spiral deeper into her gambling habit, using grief as her newest excuse? We’re honestly scared to guess.
If you thought office politics were messy, wait till you see what’s happening at Tomisin’s house. Watch Close of Business every Monday to Wednesday at 8:30 PM on Africa Magic Showcase.
