Bed of Thorns (#Tosirika) has been awarded the Africa Focus Award at the London ArtHouse Film Festival.

The narrative (produced by Eleanor Nabwiso and features comedian Martha Kay and media personality Malaika Tenshi) revolves around the lives of female friends who are going through elements of abuse in their lives and puts the spotlight on gender-based violence whilst encouraging people to speak out against the heinous act.

Speaking to the BBC about the film, Nwabiso explained that she’s had friends and neighbours who have been victims of abuse. “I want to put out gender-based violence in detail, I want to put out cyberbullying in detail, I want to put out emotional torture in detail,” she said.

When asked if she thinks people will reject the message, the filmmaker mentioned that many people might reject the message due to cultural norms in Africa that assume that a man should beat their wife as a sign of love or because of the gross belief from others that the woman might have been at fault. “A man beating a woman is wrong, not just in Africa, but across the world," concluded Nwabiso.

Catch Bed of Thorns on Saturday, 23 November at 21:30 on Pearl Magic, DStv Channel 161 and GOtv Channel 304. In the interim, check out the trailer below for a sneak preview on what to expect.
