Iryn Namubiru’s journey has been filled with many ups and downs. The Ugandan singer rose to fame over ten years ago but quickly got a taste of bad publicity after things started falling apart in her life. The singer opened up about her life on Story Yange and we got to discover quite a lot about her.
Here are four interesting things we learned about the singer:
She was a very reserved child
Iryn revealed her shyness was mainly caused by other people. “I was always quiet because I had a lisp. Some kids and even some adults would mock me and repeat what I say. Or when I sang, they would mimic me,” she shared.
Her love for music was reignited in secondary school
Music has always been something she’s been good at and she found her voice again when she got to secondary school. She revealed: “There was the normal school choir, and then there was another one. Those ones were the best – very beautiful voices. I don’t know who discovered me. I don’t think I was discovered. I would sing for everyone around me.”
Surviving a boat accident renewed her faith in God
Iryn had no idea what she was getting herself into when she agreed to go on a boat cruise with a group of people she knew. “I was the most doubtful person when it comes to God, but now I can tell you God is there and God does miracles and wonders.” She mentioned that she had refused to go on the cruise about three times, before the accident happened. “What they never told us was that the boat was actually faulty, and it was leaking,” Iryn explained. The boat got into an accident and fortunately, she survived.
She helps women and children through her NGO
While she’s been involved in a lot of charity work, Iryn also has her own organisation called Gather for Children. Iryn revealed that she uses her own cash to help mothers and children, instead of relying on donations. “All the money I’ve been using has been coming out of my own pocket or the little that I have,” she said.
