While the rest of South Africa was sleeping, Atlanta Georgia, where the 68th Annual Miss Universe pageant was held, celebrated as Former Miss South Africa, Zozibini Tunizi was crowned as Miss Universe 2019.
The beauty pageant took place last night for the very first time at the Tyler Perry Studios in the USA. The show was hosted by beauty pageant veteran Steve Harvey, as well as beauty queen Vanessa Lachey.
Zozibini managed to beat 90 contestants as she not only graced the Miss Universe stage with elegance but also wowed the crowd with her responses.
Here are 3 ways we feel Zozibini stood out from the rest:
3. When she spoke on climate change:
“Future leaders could do a little bit more, but we as individuals can also play a part in making the climate the way it should be in the future. We have children protesting about the climate and, as adults, we should join as well. We should have corporations join and the government should take it seriously. It is up to us to keep our planet safe.”
2. In her closing speech, Zozibini spoke about wanting to empower young women to feel confident.
She said, “I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never considered to be beautiful. I think that it is time that that stops today.”
1. Hours before winning the beauty pageant, Zozibini thanked both her parents for raising her to become the grounded women she is today.
She wrote, “I am because you are. You have given me life, you've raised me to be the woman I am, so that I can stand in a faraway land proudly knowing I'm rooted and where I'm from.”
