In the Black-ish spin-off, Rainbow who is fondly known as Bo (played by Tracee Ellis Ross), takes us back to the mid-80s during her adolescence years to explain her unique story.
For those who are unfamiliar with Kenya Barris’ (ish) series, Black-ish is centred around Andre and Rainbow Johnson and their five children. They are a middle-class black family who resides in a largely white neighbourhood and are confronted with issues such as racism.
Mixed-ish which airs on Thursdays at 19:00 on 1 Magic, follows Bo and her siblings as they are forced to leave the comfortable compound, they’ve called home for years to integrate into the traditional schooling system.
The family is thrown straight into capitalist America where they experience a fair share amount of culture shock. Bo is forced to confront her bi-racial identity for the first time which both she and her siblings struggle to adjust to. Bo and her siblings are constantly teased by the schoolchildren for the way they look.
Although Kenya Barris’ shows are no stranger to tackling big issues, Mixed-ish is full of humour as we’ve come to expect of his shows.
