When you’re ready to take your relationship to the next level, one of the most significant decisions you make is introducing your partner to your parents. For many, it’s one of the toughest steps you take because your parents' reaction can go in one of two ways: your parents approve of your significant other or they completely disapprove.

You always hope for the best outcome but what if their reaction really swings in the other direction? What do you do then?

Take time to understand your parents

At first glance, it may seem like your parents only have their interests at heart and are disregarding your feelings. Take the time to consider where your parents are coming from. Maybe there really is a concern that you’re missing.

Talk to your parents

It’s important to take the time to sit down with your parents and hear why they disapprove of your partner. When you understand the reasons for their disapproval it’s easier to work towards finding a solution. You’ll also need to make an effort to talk to your partner so you can understand the situation from various perspectives.

Don’t neglect your relationship

When the focus is on your parents, it can be easy to neglect your partner which can lead to more conflict. Always ensure that there’s an open and honest line of communication between you and your partner.
